The American Farm Bureau Federation, the largest U.S. farmer group, has stated during its convention in Nashville, Tennessee that it intends to inform President Trump that his aggressive immigration policies will cause a potential shortage of farm workers who harvest crops. Ironically, these farmers are one of the staunchest supporters of President Trump during his election.
In a 2014 study by the Federation, 25% of U.S. farm workers or more than 300,000 workers are undocumented immigrants. The study suggests that the number of workers have probably risen to a million or as much as 70% of U.S. farm workers. In addition, the study stated that deportations of undocumented farm workers and closing off the border with Mexico will transfer 61% of U.S. food production to other countries and potentially cause loss of jobs in the U.S.
