Trump Travel Ban Will Weaken U.S. Economy, Says MIT President

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) President Rafael Reif says that the Trump Administration’s travel ban against Muslim-majority countries will discourage and prevent students from coming to the U.S. to study and establish technology businesses and ultimately hurt the U.S. economy. Reif, himself an immigrant from Venezuela, mentioned that MIT graduates have established more than 30,000 companies in the U.S. that contribute $2 trillion in annual revenues to the U.S. economy. 40% of MIT’s student body are foreigners. MIT has publicly shown its opposition by filing amicus briefs in lawsuits against the Trump Administration’s travel ban and the rescission of the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals program.
