In another reversal of an Obama-era policy, the Trump Administration has stopped the release of pregnant undocumented immigrant detainees from federal custody. Pregnant undocumented immigrant women who are in their third trimester are generally not detained. In addition, individual cases are assessed by immigration officials based on the women’s flight risk, medical condition, and if they pose a danger to the public. Pregnant detainees not in their third semester are, thus, exposed to potential deportation. This Trump Administration policy was met with widespread criticism by Immigrant organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union, Women’s Refugee Commission, and National Immigrant Justice Center. The Trump Administration policy was described by immigrant organizations as tantamount to human rights abuse and anti-immigrant.
