DOJ and Attorney General Sessions Threaten Sanctuary Cities with Subpoenas

The Department of Justice and Attorney General Jeff Sessions have signified their intention to subpoena the 23 so-called sanctuary cities across the U.S., especially New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, as regards whether the cities’ local law enforcement officers are sharing information and assisting the federal government with regard to enforcing immigration laws. This marks another escalation of tensions between the sanctuary cities and the federal government with the issue of strict immigration law enforcement. The federal government, specifically the DOJ, has threatened to cut hundreds of million dollars in federal funding assistance to sanctuary cities if they continue to protect undocumented immigrants and defy the federal government.
