Lukasz Niec, a Michigan doctor who has been living in the U.S. for 40 years on a green card, was arrested and detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents for convictions of destruction of property less than $100 and receiving and concealing stolen goods that he committed when he was 17 years old. Mr. Niec pleaded guilty to the charges under Michigan law but such plea agreements are not officially honored by ICE.
Mr. Niec was 5 years old when he arrived in the U.S. from Poland with his parents and siblings. Mr. Niec’s family now fears that he will be deported back to Poland. Mr. Niec is only one of hundreds, if not thousands, of individuals being subjected to harsh immigration law enforcement by the Trump Administration in its quest of strictly enforcing immigration laws and greatly minimizing legal immigration.
