Detention of NYC Immigrant Rights Leader Sparks Protests

Protests were held outside the Federal Building in Manhattan, New York after immigrant rights leader Ravi Ragbir was detained by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) while holding a peaceful outside the said building. Ragbir was detained for a 16-year old conviction for wire fraud and can possibly face deportation. Ragbir is the executive director of the New Sanctuary Coalition of New York City. He is an undocumented immigrant but with U.S. citizen family members. In the wake of Ragbir’s arrest, City councilmen Ydanis Rodriguez and Jumaane Williams were arrested in an ensuing clash with the police.
