Trump Administration Sues California Over Sanctuary Cities

The Trump Administration through the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against California naming California Governor Edmund G. Brown and Attorney General Xavier Becerra as defendants to stop a set of “sanctuary state” bills that undermines the federal government’s enforcement of immigration laws across California such as the non-cooperation of California cities and counties with federal law enforcement. The California laws being assailed by the lawsuit are, namely: prohibition on private employers from volunteering information to federal immigration officers about their undocumented workers, prohibition on local law enforcement from giving information on criminal immigrants to federal immigration officers and prohibition on their transfer to federal custody, and empowering the State to inspect federal and Department of Homeland Security documents regarding immigration law enforcement. The lawsuit will test limits of federal immigration laws in relation to State laws protecting undocumented immigrants.
