DHS Extends Syrian Refugees’ Temporary Protected Status

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen announced on Wednesday that the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation of Syrian Refugees in the U.S. will be extended for 18 months. After an extensive re-assessment of existing conditions in Syria and after inter-agency consultations, the DHS determined that armed conflict and violence persisting in Syria calls for the TPS designation extension of the more than 7,000 Syrian refugees living and working in the U.S. Syrians with TPS status are eligible to re-register for an extension until September 30, 2019. To be eligible for Syrian TPS designation, individuals must have continuously resided in the U.S. since August 1, 2016, and have been continuously physically present in the U.S. since October 1, 2016.
