California Federal Judge Permanently Blocks Executive Order on Sanctuary Cities

U.S. District Judge William Orrick for the Northern District of California on November 21 issued a permanent injunction blocking the Trump Administration’s Executive Order threatening to deprive cities of federal funding for public security should the cities not cooperate with federal aggressive policies against illegal immigrants. So-called sanctuary cities are cities or counties across the country providing legal assistance and protection to illegal immigrants from arrest or deportation by the federal government. Such sanctuary cities include New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Austin, Washington D.C., among others.

The lawsuit was filed by San Francisco and Santa Clara County in California. Judge Orrick in his order stated that “The Counties have demonstrated that the Executive Order Has caused and will cause them constitutional injuries by violating the separation of powers doctrine and depriving them of their 10th and 5th Amendment Rights.”
